The Great Escape

Those who know me or who have followed for awhile know I have a tendency for odd situations. I'm not sure if I'm just oblivious or just playing by the wrong set of rules. Maybe both.

Bailey has had soccer games the past two weekends that are annoyingly far away. This past Sunday we woke up early and drive almost 2 hours down to Tacoma. The game was being held at a middle school. I happened to be behind another team parent as we drove in. We circled the first small lot. No parking. Headed through the second larger lot. He headed out and decided to park his smaller car on the narrow street closer to the field. I found a spot in the lot for my bigger car. Bailey headed out to warm up while I spent 45 minutes in my car editing pictures.

Game time came and I locked up and headed to the field. I noticed there was a church session going on inside as I went by.

After the game (crushing loss) I headed back out to the lot. I walked past the smaller lot which still had some cars in it. Headed to the bigger lot and I was the only car left. AND all 4 gates to the lot had been closed and padlocked!  I was stuck!

I was irritated, slighty panicky, may have said an inappropriate word or two (apologized to Bailey for my language). I looked at the curb, Bailey told me I wouldn't make it over because it angled up on the other side. Oh crap. We did a little look around, made sure there were no observers and I drove my car alongside the pedestrian path, over the sidewalk, off the curb and escaped the lot!

I hope you have the sufficiently humorous visual now. My lesson: don't let anything hold you back. Sometimes you have to break the rules to get free. (This is not an endorsement to break laws!)

Have a great day!

Chalkboard Signs

I mentioned I had bought some chalkboard paint awhile ago. I had thought I would use it first on pumpkins but it just wasn't calling me. (My internal "phone" was off the hook for a few days. No motivation.)

I had my first photo shoot that came from my Groupon special last Saturday. Like most of us, I "pin" photo inspiration all the time. I looked everywhere but couldn't find the photo I wanted to replicate. I think it was saved on my previous phone.

The family was holding chalkboard signs with their names, ages, or grades, etc. I decided to just go with simple names.

The Groupon is huge discount so I wanted an inexpensive way to make chalkboards so I wouldn't lose money. I went to the dollar store and picked up three coloring boards. I used my handy dandy chalkboard paint to cover the front and sides. I let it cure a couple of days and then conditioned it with chalk (that's fancy talk for rubbed chalk all over them and then wiped it off). I think they came out pretty cute.

Now I need to work on some fancy chalkboard writing for next time. It was fun working with this family and capturing these two active boys in motion.

Pumpkin Carving

I'm still without internet/wireless on my laptop and so it's taking me a bit to get my posts up. Having to go through a bit if a process to get my photos loaded. Thanks for your patience!

The kids carved their pumpkins a couple if weeks ago. This year they both decided to go with a Monsters Inc. theme.

It all started as we were browsing Google images for pumpkin inspiration. (Do you do this?) We came across a Mike Wazowski pumpkin. Bailey decided it was the perfect design for his green pumpkin. Anique went with the theme and did a Sully pumpkin. No, her pumpkin is not blue.

Bailey wasn't happy with how his came out and we made a quick dash back to farm for a new pumpkin. Which he has not yet re-carved. He's a little type A but with short focus. I wonder where he gets it...?

A Lazy Moment Gone Wrong

I am not one to wear my pajamas out in public. Sweats yes. Pajamas no. Tacky right?

Tonight after work, I came home for about half an hour before I had to leave to pick Anique up from cheer. I changed out of my work clothes and because I was freezing (45 degrees is my perception of cold) I decided to change into my fleece pajama bottoms and matching shirt.

Ken looks at me and asks if I'm really going to pick her up while wearing pajamas. I tell him it's just a couple of moms. It'll be fine.

I arrive at the school where they are practicing and am not pleasantly surprised to find the school has a big costume party event going on for the kids, and of course the parents with them. The school lights are on. The parking lot is full. And crowds of people are milling and mingling outside.

Oh crap. I park on the far side of the school and attempt to stick to the shadows as I walk the perimeter of the school to get to where the girls are practicing. I keep my head up and smile confidently at parents as I pass by them like it's no big deal to be walking around in my pajamas at 7:30pm.

Oh geez! I've learned my lesson. There is never an okay time to leave the house in my pajamas.

A Declaration and Groupon

I am working on developing my photography business. I am practicing being comfortable with declaring myself a photographer.

Self-doubt and all those negative feelings inside try to ask me who do I think I am? What are my credentials? Well, the answer: I. Am. A. Photographer.

True story. No qualifications, no justification. It just is. So there self-doubt! Take that.

Hey, it must be true because my business has a Groupon. It's official. You can get some awesome pictures at a great price. I get to meet new people and do what I love. Win. Win.

Do you Groupon? I do for sure: doughnuts, gym, bed and breakfast, Christmas gifts, etc.  Love them!

What have you bought through Groupon?

Washi Tape

Oh. My. Goodness. Have you entered the wonderful world of Washi tape? I'm a little late to the party but fully committed now.

My friend Mary gave be a couple rolls when I left my job last June. She gave them to me to help inspire my creativity.

I have to say I am hooked. I really should be using them more but I'm mostly collecting them. I try to pick up rolls that coordinate. And I'd course I'm a sucker for stripes and polka dots.

I like using them to decorate envelopes with a few strips of color. They also look fabulous added to a canvas. Sometimes purely ornamental, other times they inspire the entire pallete.

What are you using Washi tape for? Please share! I need inspiration and another good reason to keep collecting.

Texture Tuesday - Pumpkin

Textured with KK Anna

Do you like the bumpy, warty pumpkins? The green pumpkins? White pumpkins? Or do you prefer a classic smooth, evenly ridged orange pumpkin?

I personally like the texture of the bumpy pumpkins. They come in all different colors and it's like being automatically decorated. No carving required. Okay, so you could carve them but eeew, it's so slimy.

I do like to paint the smooth pumpkins. Usually, I paint designs or faces on them. Although this year, I have seen lots of pumpkins with chalkboard paint and am thinking of trying it out.

Yes, I just bought my first can of chalkboard paint. I'm a little late to the trend. Now I can't decide what I'm going to paint first. It might as well be a pumpkin, right?

Let's Go Vikings

I have to admit football is not my sport (consider this another confession). It's not a a sport that holds my attention. I like the fanfare and the excitement of everyone watching.

And the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders are really my favorite part.

And isn't she the cutest thing ever? No bias here....really!

Introducing Kaylah

Kaylah is a high school senior this year. She is my new senior rep for her school. We had fun shooting her senior photos down by the river. I have to say it was easy. She is remarkably good-natured. Even when I had her wade into the water to get to the perfect log. And she has a beautiful smile.

I'm excited to be working with her this year. Here are a few more of her pretty pictures.
