Bright Eyes and a Big Smile

It was a beautiful sunny weekend and I had a need to get in some photos but Bailey was somewhere with a friend and Anique was out with her grandparents. Ken is not a willing photo subject so not to be deterred, I sent out a text to the neighbor (mom of Anique's best friend) and borrowed a kid.
Anique and M are inseparable. They have been fortunate to be in the same class the past two years and are in constant communication. It has been fun watching these two girls grow up together. Girls are most definitely different than little boys (I know. duh!)
M is almost always happy. She has an infectious laugh and is super high energy. You always know what's on her mind. I love that she is never afraid to ask questions.
Listening to the two of them together dreaming and planning always brightens my day. These two are going to conquer the world.
If you follow me on Facebook you saw a sneak peak of these last week. Here's the complete mini-session from our photos session in the yard.

A Little Bit of Organizing

This weekend I was determined to get some long neglected projects taken care of.
We have long had a junk drawer. When we bought our house in 2001 it was new construction. The builders threw some spare parts into a drawer in the kitchen in case we needed them for finishing the downstairs. At the time, we were just moving in and didn't have a spot to put away all these bits and pieces so we left them in the drawer. And then over the years all our other bits and pieces would get tossed in there. Then it expanded to the drawer next to it (not pictured).
We've gone throught the contents a few times and added pencil boxes. We seem to have an abundance of writing implements. Finally, Saturday evening I decided I had had enough. I headed to Target and picked up two sets of these mesh organizers. Everything has a place now and while we could definitely cut back on the number of pens and pencils we have it's a major improvements.
The organizers were kind of a tight fit. I'm thinking these bamboo expandable ones would have been a good choice too. If I update the drawer in the future this is what I would pick.
What projects did you do this weekend?

Entry Way Evolution

As a mother we try to teach our kids the important things like compassion, the Golden Rule, look both ways before crossing the street, don't start forest fires, etc. and you get ahead of yourself and start thinking you're pretty good at this. You may not be mother of the year but hey your kids are mostly clean and polite (at least in public).
Then you walk into their bathroom and notice they are squeezing the toothpaste from the middle and you wonder how you totally failed as a mother.
Quick update on the entry way. I have been looking for a better way to display the glass buoy and woven-like spheres that were just rolling about loose on the top.

I came across some polished river rock and other stones when I was forced to reorganize a cabinet to make the crockpot fit again. How it could come out of that same cabinet and not fit back in is an ongoing mystery. Why was a bag of rock in that cabinet? No idea.

I found a large bowl in the same cabinet and created a bed of smaller rocks for the larger spheres to rest on. It's feeling much more pulled together. Still need to find the perfect bowl but I'm on the right track.

I think there may also be a cabinet face lift in the near future.
Here's a few photos of how the space has evolved.

In the beginning...

A little bit of furniture...and stuff...
A new light...

Feeling a bit more together now.

M is for . . .

You may or may not remember the letters I made previously.

I loved how they came out and was inspired to make a few more. Fueled with enthusiasm, I headed to the craft store to pick up a few more letters. Then proceeded to ignore them for several months.

I created my mail station for packaging and preparing my photo orders for shipping. Looking to dress it up a little, I looked through my letters and realized I had the right ones to spell M A I L out. They were different sizes but I was okay with that.

The fun part was picking out papers that would compliment the turquoise walls and orangey accents I'm trying to incorporate in the room. A little gloss medium and Washi tape helped bring them together.

I really like how they came out so far. The edges will be painted to finish them and an inspirational word added to them but for now they are a pretty addition to this cheery space.

Friday Finds: Eye Candy

Yesterday was one of those whirlwind days where you get so much done but end feeling totally depleted. I thought I was tired when I got home from work. We had started early that day with an orthodontist appointment and some housework.
Then I was reminded I had agreed to take Bailey and Ellie to the movies that night. Umm, okay, no problem. I dropped them off and had a couple of hours to fill. First stop, the book store. I found this amazing book. Complete eye candy and I love, love, love quotations. Pardon the sickly picture. I was reading in a car by dome light but had to capture it.
Next stop was World Market to find Mother's Day gifts. These fabric covered boxes were too pretty to pass up. And the soaps and candles smell delicious. Again, it's a poor cell phone picture when I got home but hey even with bad color and pixelation you see how lovely they are. It's too bad you can't smell them through your screen. It's amazing!
Have a beautiful weekend.

Counting Drawers

I bought this little set of drawers at IKEA over 10 years ago. I had never painted it or decorated it. It has held various items over the years. If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen this picture with a sneak peek at the drawers.

Being a smaller item, it was the perfect candidate for adding some of my accent color. I slid the drawers out and put two coats of white on the frame. I painted the fronts of the drawers with Glidden Vibrant Day Lily in satin.

I felt like it still needed something. I pulled out my silver leafing supplies and stenciled on some numbers. I'm loving how it turned out. And best of all, now when I send the kids down to grab something I can reference exactly which drawer it is in. Double bonus!

And one more shot of my newly made over desk. My poor tulips have seen better days but they were such a pretty color I couldn't quite give them up yet.

Texture Tuesday: Anique

Edited with 2 layers of KK_Havana (Soft Light and Color Burn)

I realize this picture does not go with this weeks theme but I had edited it before I remembered to check this weeks theme for Texture Tuesday. I apologize for being off topic.
When I took this my daughter had huge circles under her eyes. I thought she was just tired from the sleepover the night before with a friend, that combined with allergy season.  Well, a day later she was at the walk-in clinc with abdominal pain and a fever over 103 degrees. Thankfully, the antibiotics she has been on the past two weeks have worked wonders and she is back to her normal bubbly self.

Oh Baby

I was excited to have a chance to photograph this beautiful family. The Mama and I had discussed some ideas ahead of time and she was up to trying anything. Including some shots that really showed off her beautiful belly. Despite the very chilly weather and somewhat public venue.

Can you believe this is her third baby? She glows. So inspiring.

Desk Delight

In the continuing saga of studio furniture makeovers...we have the desk. Formerly I had a huge desk with matching bookshelf. I got this much more compact desk from work. They were updating one of the offices and going to donate it. I neglected to take a decent before picture. It has more than a few dings and scratches but is sturdy and well put together.

Once again, in order to unify it with the rest of the room, it needed a makeover. I painted the legs white and finished the top in the same black onx Glidden paint as my mail center

It looked cute but it needed a little pizzazz. My silver leafing supplies were out from another project so I dug through my templates and found a fun, random chevron pattern.

I applied the adhesive through the stencil to the front facer board. A little while later I started laying my leaf over the dried adhesive (follow the rules on the packaging). I found that it didn't brush off very cleanly in some areas. I'm thinking this is because I did the process too soon after applying the black latex paint. It was dry to the touch but I think it would have been more successful if I had done it after a few days when the black paint had cured.

Overall I'm still happy with how it came out. It looks much more modern now and my awesome bright file folders look snazzy in top. (hmm, I guess I didn't get a photo of those either.)
